Are you a Clutch Performer?

IMG_0478Have you ever notice that when it’s crunch time and the games on the line, it always seems like the superstars are the ones that rise to the occasion. Whether it is in football, basketball, baseball, or my personal favorite, ice hockey, you know that there are certain players that are going to be the ones that deliver when it counts.

In sports, delivering when it counts is often referred to as being “clutch”.

For those of you unfamiliar with the term, a “clutch” athlete is one who performs well in pivotal or high-pressure situations. It’s that special ability to overcome challenges, seizing the moment, and winning when it matters most. More importantly, “clutch” players know that it’s not how you start, but how you finish that matters.

Well it’s crunch time in sales. It’s the end of the quarter and you can either use it as an excuse to linger in mediocrity or you can seize the moment when it matters most. The difference between good and great (aka “clutch”) is determined by the mindset you choose. The choice is yours.

Are you going to be the one to deliver when it counts? Are you going to be “clutch”?

If you’re going to be the guy, Mr. “Clutch” (sorry ladies), adopt a “whatever it takes” attitude. Have the passion and the intensity required to make it happen. Work your tail off, play to win, and give it your best shot. There is an old saying in hockey that the shot never taken is the shot never made. If you want to be “clutch” you have to take the shot.

What sets winners apart is the ability to come through, to overcome challenges, to deliver when it matters the most. The end of the quarter, like the end of the big game, is the time that separates the men from the boys, the players from the pretenders, the average Joes from the Sales Rock Stars! Remember, there is no second place in sales and the key to winning is being “clutch”.
