Time to set your goals for 2012

It is the time of year where many reflect on the decisions that were made over the past year. If you did an assessment of the past year, you probably concluded that you made some right and some wrong decisions. (Hopefully more good than bad decisions.)

With a New Year only a few short days away, many are looking for chance to start anew. Why not? It’s a new year, a new start. Many will proclaim those proverbial “New Years Resolutions”. You know, the ones that get abandoned and forgotten sometime around mid-February. Why, because a resolution, by definition, is nothing more than a formal expression of an opinion or intention.

A goal on the other hand, is a desired result with plans and commitments to the obtainment within a finite timeframe.

Previously I wrote about the five things you should do this week to prepare for the upcoming year. I believe that setting personal goals is a critical step to insuring your success. It is a powerful process for thinking about your ideal future, and for motivating yourself to turn your vision into reality. The process of setting goals gives you clarity, focus, and purpose. They will help drive you forward, make you accountable and help you to achieve your highest potential.

Start by taking the time to really think about what YOU want to accomplish. They are YOUR goals. They reflect YOUR values, YOUR talents, and YOUR mission. Once you have decided what your goals are, you need to formalize them into a concise format and commit them to paper. Make sure that write your goals in the positive not the negative. Make sure that a specific goal doesn’t contradict any of your other goals. Also, write out your goals in complete detail. I use a method I call START  (Specific, Targeted, Actionable, Realistic, Time specific) to clearly define my goals.

Once you have clearly defined what your goals are, type them up, print, sign and date it. Keep them somewhere that you can easily access and review them on a daily basis. It will help to keep you motivated, committed, and focused. You will be more organized, as well as more productive. You will be able make things happen each day towards the obtainment of your goals.

Winners in life set goals and follow through in pursuit of them. Winners decide what they want in life and get it by developing detailed plans. Goals aren’t difficult to set, and they aren’t difficult to reach. It’s up to you to find out what your values, vision and goals really are. You are the one who must decide what to pursue and in what direction you want to go.
